Writing Sample #1 - my 8th grade boredom
Hey i’m Dru Iglesia and i’m typing in the search bar because IXL isnt working! i'm in math 8 as of period 1 and im not getting into the website i don’t even know my own passcode or account ID so i decided to just type in the search bar because i’m bored i spelled bored wrong because i’m typing really fast for no reason and not even deciding to check my spelling because i’m lagging and ramone just cussed! as PJ giggles in the background and ms tkachuck (don’t mind the way i spelled it) lectures ramone about cussing and everyone's starting to talk again while Chris tried to tell me that my web page is working and it clearly isn’t working and the day didn’t go as planned for period one on flannel friday! so sad SO SAD ;-; as I type as much as i can in this search bar I hope what i’m searching for in this search bar will come to me because if you're reading this i’m going to Copy and paste it to Echo so others can view this as a saying that going on the chromebooks in math won't work because core class steal all the band width! SO SAD SAD i should add a lenny face to this! Flannel friday on the other hand as our class only has 14 people wearing flannel because no one has a flannel! In core class we are working on a bill of rights game that is really fun to work on but also really hard to work on as well! The more I type the more I’m getting to the limit to the search bar! if there even is any... I hope that IXL will start working for me because terje is hogging all the band width! Google is probably the best search engine of all time and no one can disagree with me because it literally has everything from youtube to blogger and probably has the most variety out of other search engines like bing or yahoo! Speaking of YouTube i follow a wide variety of channels which is really combo of youtube channels from gaming channels to home interior to cooking channels to fail compilation channels! I’m really bored right now so i’m typing this in complete silence of the class i really didn’t plan my friday to be on IXL anyway it doesn’t even work so this is i guess productive? No yes maybe so! But really doing this giant ONE sentence paragraph because i like typing in this! this is becoming a very long “essay” you can call it I guess with a lot of spelling errors which would get me a C on this but maybe I’ll check my spelling if I even can in a search bar! My next class is Band and i’m not really looking forward to that either we have a sub and we don’t even have a piece of music yet to work on! it's really boring i even skipped morning 0 period Jazz because we were doing sectionals…. I’m really getting tired of this class and we are going to end it soon anyway at 8:45 so I mine as well use this time to type in this long irrelevant essay! what can i talk about that randomly into my mind? my crush? lol no you ain’t knowing anything about that! Im 14 born on oct 2nd 2001 i'm pretty young looking for my age and also pretty short i haven’t even roden all the rides at six flags because the last time i went i was only 4’ 9”! ahah yeah laugh at that huh… I cri ;-; but seriously i’m not crying at all and i’m actually just typing this essay with a serious face just like anyone on the internet would be like if you haven’t known already anyone who says “lol” or “haha” is never going to laugh only smirk or smile but that’s it max they will do because who's going to laugh at a bunch of words on a screen? maybe with a picture next to it but that’s it! This giant essay in the search has gotten out of hand and its 8:38 and i’m going to have to log out soon so mine as well the best of it in these last words i'm typing within this giant essay of irrelevance.. I might even copy and paste this from the search bar and put it in a doc so i can continue this later! this is also a very good way to release stress because I feel good just letting it all out on paper? or would you say screen? anyway more things i can talking about… maybe a TV show? nah I don’t watch TV anymore i’m always on my laptop watching youtube anyway! it’s kinda sad that most people stopped watching TV! I might watch it for the last season of American idol but that's about all id ever do! and now that it's 8:42 i'm going to have to end this essay off with a BANG so what should i say for the last few sentences? hm…
Writing Sample #2 - Performance Review Essay
Due to being an absolute fail in attending a concert within the weeks before the deadline. I’ve come to a compromise, with permission by Ms. Tsarnas to do my performance review essay on the College Park HS Symphonic band at their winter concert, December 12th at 7:00pm.
The CPHS Symphonic band having a total of 58 students playing in the ensemble conducted by Mr Jimenez had a wonderful concert on Tuesday with a great arrangement of songs starting with West Highlands Sojourn including 3 movements called 1. Stow-On-the Wold, II. Bradford Ballad, and III. On Derwentwater. The song was fairly long, but was expected by a song with 3 movements. The first movement was my favorite as the quite large trumpet section was the soul of the first movement with their fanfare-type soli. The Band’s balance and blend was decent and allowed for each respected soli from either section to be prominent and be heard over the noticeable backgrounds. After the first movement the second took a more legato approach and the ensemble transitioned from the first movements more staccato articulation well enough. Each movement gave me different emotions and the First movement gave me confident and proud vibes while the second movement suddenly made me feel sad and looking out the window on a rainy day thinking about our place in the universe. The third movement made me think of old christmas movies and a paper boy racing his bike to give the neighborhood their paper.
The next piece was Bring a Torch arranged by David Shipps. I wouldn’t say this was favorite piece out of the 3 that were performed not because the performance of the band, but it was a basic tune to me and didn’t give me any strong emotions or vibes that really enticed me. There was also a snare drum part around the middle of piece that overpowered the band just a tad, but to be fair and percussion instrument can be heard over the whole band. I didn’t have a score to reference off of but I felt that the snare drum was off beat and didn’t blend too well with the ensemble. The woodwind section sounded beautiful but I did catch a few creaky noises from that most woodwind instruments would make from time to time. Let’s not say that these measly mistakes cost the performance, but did make me cringe a little inside.
Of course the ensemble ended with a lovely march, Radetzky March Op,282 arranged by Alfred Reed. This piece had a lot of contrast and different sections echoing each other. The brass section would announce themselves and shortly after the woodwinds would follow suit and repeat them. This piece involved a lot of unity and playing in unison and I think the ensemble did a good on executing that. Although there was a oboe/clarinet soli near the beginning that didn’t sound together and some would be play a note behind. The march had a lot of switching back and forth between sections to do their phrases or melodies to then cut off for another section to come in. The ensemble followed the conductor and knew when to enter on time and had little to no mistakes. I feel like the performance could’ve used more pieces that gave you stronger emotions and the last two lacked in that. Bring a Torch didn’t give me as much feels as the first piece and I felt that the feels slowly went away after the first piece and didn’t come back after that. I think this performance really made me think that the world doesn’t revolve around just my section as I listened to the pieces the songs never just showcases one section, but every section has their own specific role in each piece and it all blended together in harmony.
This performance was a learning experience for me and was quite enjoyable to listen to the older and more skilled group at my school. Their pieces were all very pleasing to listen to and had me glued down listening to them. Classical music is really the only true music can get your emotions out like no other genre of music. Each song was beautiful and had me waiting for the next after. In my opinion I would definitely recommend anyone to coming to CPHS to listen to the next winter concert in 2017.

Your favorite pieces and why: My favorite piece was the West Highlands Sojourn, because it gave the most emotions and vibes and had great contrast between each movement.
Your least favorite piece and why: my least favorite would have to be Bring a Torch, because it didn’t pack the same punch as the first movement and wasn’t all that emotional as the other pieces and didn’t give me any strong feels.
Ensemble Sound
Blend: In Radetsky March the soli’s with the oboes/clarinets blended well
Balance: In the first movement the trumpet’s fanfare was profound and stood out
Articulation: In the first movement there was a lot of staccato notes that were well accented
Intonation: In the march the oboe sounded a little sharp but nothing to ruin the performance
Tone: During their tuning Bflat the instrument's tone was full and that carries through each piece
Dynamics: The band’s dynamics were very good in when they didn’t the melody they quieted down and got louder during their soli’s or melody.
